Public Health and Obesity

Health is a condition of mental, physical and social well being in which infirmity and illness are absent. We all know the basic facts about health: good health is healthy body, sound mind, and good spirit. It is just that we sometimes fail to attain the state in all three areas simultaneously. Sometimes, we may even have a healthy body, mind and spirit but still be afflicted with ill health. When this happens, we may turn to traditional medicine for assistance. But before turning to medical help, we must first go to the cause of our current state of health.

There are three types of health conditions: physical, mental, and environmental factors. Physical health refers to our body. It refers to how our organs function such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Mental health refers to our thought processes and our outlook on life. And environmental factors refer to the surrounding or the surroundings in which we live our lives.

The first thing to consider in terms of mental health is the quality of our relationships and connections with other people. People with poor relationships tend to experience distress both physically and mentally. Mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, as well as substance abuse, can be a result of poor relationships. Likewise, living in an environment that is abusive to women, mentally ill individuals, or drug users can cause physical health conditions such as ulcers, back pain, joint pain, and other physical ailments.

Our mental health is reflected in our physical well-being. Therefore, it is important to maintain a wholesome weight, an active lifestyle, and a diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein. Our physical well-being can affect our overall health. Thus, people who are overweight or obese, have poor muscle tone, or low muscle mass index (SMCI), are at increased risk for many common and complex diseases. Similarly, those who abuse drugs or alcohol are at increased risk for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. In addition, people who smoke cigarettes are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

The quality of our physical life is reflected in the quality of our health. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and unhealthy lifestyle are associated with poor health and can exacerbate any medical conditions we already have. These medical conditions can then aggravate existing health issues. As a result of this, many people living in poor health are at high risk for developing a range of serious public health problems. Examples of these public health problems include obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

It is important to note that there are multiple factors that contribute to health disparities. Factors such as social factors, psychological factors, economic stability, and cultural practices can all work together to create health disparities. This means that treating everyone fairly is impossible. However, by taking the right steps, the United States can achieve a higher standard of overall health for all of its citizens. There are many programs and organizations that are working toward improving the health of our nation’s poorest citizens.
